What is the key difference between the short journey and long journey certificates?

The short journey course certifies attendees for travel with animals up to 8 hours in duration. Long journey training covers everything above 8 hours and involves additional competencies including journey logs, vehicle inspections and certification for attendants as well as drivers.

Does the short journey training cover all species?

You must pass an assessment for each species of animal, bird or poultry you intend to transport. For the short journey assessment, there are 25 additional questions, 5 per species. During your test, you can choose to answer the questions for each species you intend to transport, included within your registration fee. This means you can either attempt to answer all 25 additional questions, or only the 5 questions per species that apply to your work currently.

Should I complete the Animal Transport Short Journey course even if I only transport animals occasionally?

The Welfare of Animals in Transport legislation requires training and certification regardless of the frequency of travel.

Objectives

Training for transportation of farm animals, or birds/poultry

25 multiple choice questions (all animals not including birds) and 5 questions for each of the five species of animal listed by HSE/Trading Standards

Fees for testing are per candidate, not per species, so an attendee may take the assessment for all five species for a single price. Answering the questions for all species is optional.

Registering for the Short Journey Animal Transport Assessment

To attend the examination you will need to complete a registration form and return to Hush Farms alongside your payment. We will do our best to be available within 25 hours of your request (weekdays only). Registration for the Animal Transport Certificate can only proceed once we have receipt of your details and full payment

LANTRA independently assess all completed test papers (paper or online). LANTRA will also issue the nationally recognised Animal Transport Certificate of Competence. You will usually be notified of your result within 10 working days.

You do not need to hold a driving license to sit the text, but you must be at least 16 years old.

The Legal Bit

Since January 2008, drivers and attendants using road vehicles for transporting farm animals, horses and birds in connection with an economic activity for distances exceeding 65km require an animal transport certificate of competence to comply with the law. The LANTRA certificate will enable drivers, attendants and market assembly staff to meet this requirement.

About our Animal Transport Short Journey Workshops

The HSE and Trading Standards mandates that businesses wishing to transport animals further than 65km must have staff certified and trained according to Welfare of Animals in Transit requirements.

Online animal transport short journey training

We can provide the proctored exam for this course online if you have a stable, constant internet connection, using the camera and microphone on your PC or camera to record you while you answer the multiple-choice questions.

Online proctored assessments are not suitable for anyone who requires assistance to read the questions aloud on their behalf. Anyone requiring assistance should contact either Hush Farms or LANTRA before making any payment.

Who needs to complete Animal Transport Short Journey training?

If you are regularly transporting animals over 65km then you will need to show that you have compliant certification before transporting your animals. Short journey training covers animal welfare, loading and driving with animals.
