Is remote control mower training a legal requirement?

Under PUWER 98, employers must ensure adequate training is provided to all employees using machinery to complete their work. The HSE would expect anyone using a remote control mower in a working environment to understand the equipment’s limitations and risks, and how to work safely and sensibly around them.

Is this course necessary if an employee already has a ride-on mower certificate?

Although the machinery is used for very similar operations, in practice, ride-on mowers and remote-controlled mowers are very different. Ride-on mowers are not normally used on slopes or in areas of difficult visibility or restricted access, while remote-controlled mowers don’t normally have attachments or trailed equipment. Under PUWER 98, both mower types are distinct enough that the HSE would expect a separate training session and certification for each.

Remote Control Mower Training: Course Information

As with the operation of any other powered machinery or equipment, remote control mowers are subject to PUWER 98 regulations. They are convenient, efficient and provide mowing capabilities beyond that offered by ride-on or push mowers. They have restricted sightlines, can be subject to rollover on steep slopes and present a risk from thrown hidden objects.

Due to the very wide range of mowers on the market, it is important to train on the mowers used at work. Our instructors are available to train at your location, with your machines.

Who is this course for?

This LANTRA course is suitable for anyone requiring certification on remote control mower machinery for their organisation or employment. This may include highway and local authorities maintenance, caravan park workers, golf or sports groundspeople or anyone maintaining ground in utility and infrastructure sectors. The minimum age for attending this course is 16 years old.

Objectives

Comply with legal requirements, with an emphasis on safe practices
Identify the risks associated with the use of this type of machine
Select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
Identify the controls and components
Understand the function of all instruments (if appropriate)
Carry out daily checks, as indicated in the operator’s manual
Carry out appropriate pre-start checks
Identify and report any faults
Adjust the cutting mechanism to achieve the required standard
Operate the machine in a safe and competent manner
Perform after-use maintenance
Load and transport the machine (if appropriate)

Trainees will need

A packed lunch for the day
A non-snag, non-flammable clothing appropriate to the weather conditions (you should not wear fleece-type materials)

Hush Farms can deliver remote control mower training at any of our locations across the South West or on your site, using your mowing machinery. This LANTRA course has been developed to provide competent safety and operation training when using remote control mowers, particularly when considering why these mowers are used.

Remote-controlled mowers are designed to access places other mowers can’t reach safely. This might be in hidden, restricted-access areas on a site, or on inclines or steep slopes. The risks presented when using machinery remotely, compared to a push or ride-on mower, include overturning when inclines become too much, striking hidden objects, unseen in areas of awkward visibility and thrown debris as a mower hits something in the undergrowth. This may lead to costly breakdowns or replacements, more time required to complete a job or worse still, injuries caused by rolling machinery or thrown shrapnel.
